In 2019, Tanzania witnessed a surge of innovation when AMUA Accelerator II, powered by UNFPA Tanzania in collaboration with Sahara Ventures and supported by UK Aid, launched a nationwide challenge. The goal was clear yet ambitious:
“How can youth living with disabilities easily access age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services?”
For us at Frendlicom, this challenge became an opportunity to turn an idea into reality—a solution that would bridge the communication gap between healthcare providers and people with hearing impairments.
Back in 2019, machine learning and artificial intelligence were not widely used in Tanzania. But we saw their potential. The idea was bold:
“What if we could create a machine learning model that understands sign language and translates it into normal Swahili text or speech—instantly?”
This wasn’t just about technology; it was about breaking barriers. People with hearing impairments often struggle to access essential SRH services due to communication challenges. Our solution aimed to change that by using AI to create real-time, inclusive communication.
When AMUA called for innovative ideas, over 570 submissions poured in from across the country. Each idea carried a vision of inclusion and empowerment.
Here’s how our journey unfolded:
- Stage 1 – Idea Submission: We presented Frendlicom, a platform leveraging AI and machine learning to translate sign language into Swahili speech and text.
- Stage 2 – Top 30 Selection: Out of hundreds of ideas, we made it into the top 30. This was the first validation that our solution mattered.
- Stage 3 – Top 10 Acceleration: We joined the AMUA Accelerator program in Dar es Salaam for intensive training—business modeling, user research, and product development.
- Stage 4 – The Grand Finale: From 10 finalists, we advanced to the top 4 winning teams. On 12 August 2020, during International Youth Day, we pitched our solution at the AMUA Demo Day and secured USD 6,000 in seed funding.
Our solution wasn’t just an app. It was a vision for inclusion through technology:
Machine Learning Core – The system learns sign language patterns and translates them into Swahili text or voice.
Real-Time Communication – Enables healthcare workers and clients with hearing impairments to interact without barriers.
Scalable & Localized – Designed to understand Tanzanian context and Swahili language, making it practical for SRH services.
In 2019 and 2020, applying AI this way in Tanzania was groundbreaking. It positioned Frendlicom as a pioneer in AI-driven accessibility solutions.
The AMUA journey wasn’t just about winning. It was about learning, networking, and being part of a movement that believes innovation can solve real human problems.
Through AMUA, we saw the power of collaboration—youth innovators, development partners, and technology experts coming together to make a difference.
Today, the lessons from Frendlicom continue to inspire new innovations for social good.
From an idea sketched on paper to a winning solution recognized by UNFPA Tanzania, this journey showed us that technology + purpose = impact.
As we look to the future, our mission remains the same:
to build inclusive solutions that empower everyone, regardless of ability, to access the services they deserve.
